Using Multiple Words In Awstats Exclude Filter

Written by Joe on March 6, 2008 – 7:04 pm -

Awstats LogoYou know, for years (literally) I’ve always wanted to be able to exclude certain words when looking at things like “links from an external page” while using Awstats. This especially comes in handy when you have alot of subdomains, as those links are counted as “links” the same way (actually worse, or more often) than links from other (completely different) domains. In my case, I manage free forum and blog hosting services which offer free subdomains… so that’s literally thousands of listings cluttering up what I really want to see (websites passing the most traffic via incoming links) and often eliminated just one word isn’t enough.

I’ve tried everything I could… commas, colon, semicolon, plus signs etc… then tried searching Google, Yahoo, MSN… hell I even searched Ask.com to no avail. Well today I really needed to get this working, and eventually found a delimiter that worked – the “|” – which really doesn’t suprise me. I though I tried that before… maybe I had but used a space or something (you can’t).

So, at anyrate, maybe everybody knew but me… but in case you didn’t you can use multiple words for filtering Awstats results like this keyphrase1|keyphrase2 :)

That’s fantastic – thanks. I also have been wondering this for a long time, and AWStats’ documentation is no help – all about setting up and configuring, but not actually USING. I couldn’t believe my good fortune when I saw your article with EXACTLY the info I was seeking. So, thanks again.

Thanks Joe. Ditto. Can’t believe my luck in finding this. Last time I searched I got nothing. Cannot believe this is not better documented. Now I can read my stats properly!

    cheers,

    Mike

… Just to add, no spaces between the pipe as in:

    directoryname1|directoryname2

    and not

    directoryname1 | directoryname2

As Jonathan Cooper above says, AWStats documentation only describes the installing and not the USING.

Thanks Joe for that tiny but so useful pearl of wisdom. Now to continue searching for a decent User Manual…..
